Getting Wild in Rocky Mountain Already

Western State and Montana State are already on a winning road in the Rocky Mountain Men's DII Conference.

Montana State defeated Colorado College last week in impressive fashion 44-7. Austin Llewellyn at inside center and co-captain Luke Colberg at fullback were very strong for MSU and co-captain Keyton Anderson, who plays prop, has been a force with the ball in hand and leading the pack.

Montana State hosts Northern Colorado, which won a crazy barnburner last weekend 51-50 over Colorado Mesa.

"It was a wild one for sure," said Northern Colorado flyhalf Colin Chauncey. "They were a very physical team, but we knew our fitness would pay off in the end. We came back early in the second half and were able to hold them off at the end. We're a smaller team, but we know we are well conditioned."

Well conditioned or not, they had to weather a Colorado Mesa comeback sparked by No. 8 Santos Enzo, and freshman Joseph Kamara, who was a standout for Palmer HS last season and made the HS All American team. (See more here.) For UNC, Chauncey scored two tries and center Derek French scored three.

Western State shut out UC Colorado Springs 44-0 after beating Colorado Mesa 64-5 the week before. No. 8 Greyson Lincoln scored three tries. WSU (2-0) and will host Colorado College in what should be a tough one.

Meanwhile, another contender, Colorado School of Mines, won a midweek game to open the team's league account. The Orediggers scored six tries on UC Colorado Springs in front of a boisterous crowd of 150 and moved to 1-0.

It's big weekend, then, for Mines if they want to be thought of as one of the upper echelon once more. Western State and Montana Stare have started strong.

Here are this weekend's games.
