Some of the big standouts from DIA and DIAA games this past weekend.

For some reason, No. 8 had more standouts than usual.

Darren Murphy, Thomas Stockton, NC State

The halfback combo for the Wolfpack, Murphy scored two tries and Stockton contributed a try and nine more points with the to boot to account for 24 of NC State’s 36 points in a 36-31 defeat of Salisbury.

Wesley Pan, Virginia Tech

The Hokies scrumhalf ran in two tries and three conversions for 16 points all on his own as Tech beat James Madison.

Jack Wiles, St. Bonaventure

Wiles was a workhorse for St. Bonaventure in a 32-12 defeat of Notre Dame College, hitting the breakdowns and playing excellent defense from the No. 8 position.

Jamie Demers, Michigan

A big part of the Wolverines’ forward effort, the second row also touched down twice as Michiga picked up a pretty nice Big 10 win against Minnesota.

Jack Russell, Wisconsin

Playing No. 8 for the Badgers, Russell scored a try to tie the game 17-17, and then when Michigan State retook the lead, he scored again to bring Wisconsin back from the brink, setting up the winning score in a 32-24 Wisconsin victory.

Denver Fuller, Navy

Fuller’s layout dive on a loose, bouncing ball scored the game-winning try for Navy over Kutztown, with no time left.

Jack McCarthy, John Minogue, Fairfield

Logging an impressive win over UMass, Fairfield got a huge game from their midfield, as centers McCarthy and Minogue worked nicely together to shut down the Minutemen and score five tries between them.

Anthony Mencini, Kentucky

Another No. 8, Mencini made his mark as a lineout specialist, stealing several throw-ins against Alabama, and while he was a big ground-gainer with the ball carries, his biggest effort may well have been on defense, where he was excellent.

Jae Kim, Brown

Kim is yet another No. 8 who stood out on the weekend. He scored four tries for Brown in a 74-0 defeat of Columbia.
