Gamebreakers in HS Rugby This Week

We get some notable performances from some regions where we haven't seen a lot of info, such as Rugby Colorado's club season and Rugby Washington,

And that means we can recognize more players in more states, and we like that.

Here are our Gamebreakers for the weekend of May 8-9:

Clay Peters and Joey Jacobs, Avon

Unbeaten in Indiana, Avon defeated St. Xavier of Louisville behind a solid partnership between Peters at No. 8 and Jacobs at scrumhalf. They work brilliantly together getting the Avon offense running smoothly.

Garrett Mortimer, East HS, Colorado

Down 19-12 against the Legend Titans, East HS came back to win in overtime this weekend. Mortimer, playing inside center, crashed through for a try that, with outside center Cole Younoszai's conversion, tied the game. In overtime, Mortimer did it again, scoring in the final overtime period to cap off a dramatic 26-19 victory for East.

Teni Kinikini, Genesis

The Genesis prop held strong in a very physical Utah state HS club final with West Valley, scored a key early try, and led from the front as Genesis took the title.

Owen Clarke, Staples

A hard-nosed Lock Owen Clarke was very effective in the lineouts and played hard on defense in a game that needed it, as Staples beat Greenwich 10-5.

Robbie Marti, Budd Bay

With the Rugby Washington league underway Budd Bay beat Rainier 49-10. Marti (pictured at left, 5th photo down), playing prop for the Barbarians, scored a try, gained over 130 meters on the ground, forced seven turnovers in the breakdown, and put in work all over the field acting almost like a fourth loose forward in open play.

Fielding Carlson, St. Ignatius

The St. Ignatius scrumhalf  (pictured top at left) was tasked with raining box kicks down on the Aspetuck defense, and he was an impressive asset in executing that skill. One of his kicks led directly to a try and it was his work that helped St. Ignatius control field position, which is largely why St. Ignatius defeated Aspetuck.

Christos Kalpaxis, Vienna

The Vienna No. 8 led the offensive charge in Vienna's win over West End, scoring two tries, breaking the gain line repeatedly, and earning player-of-the-game honors.

Kole McClain, Palmer Terrors

Constantly active through the weekend's win over Monarch, the Palmer flanker McClain was a workhorse in the breakdowns and on defense.

Nick Bruno, Xavier HS

The Xavier wing  (pictured 3rd on left) had a big day against St. Anthony's, scoring four tries, and he unleashed some nifty footwork that included a run where he stepped through four players, making three of them hit the deck as he was over in the corner.

Sam Adamson, Herriman

In Herriman's impressive win over Olympus in the Utah Varsity Final, Adamson poached ball and hit the rucks but makes this list because he controlled the lineout superbly, setting the platform for Herriman's attack.

Luk Otineru, Cathedral Catholic

Otineru scored two tries and was a constant offensive threat in Cathedral's win over Fallbrook.

Brock Kluempers, St. Thomas Aquinas

In his team's 39-34 defeat of SLUH, Kluempers (pictured above) did everything. The center tackled with ferocity, ran like a bulldozer, worked well over the ball, and kept everyone going the same direction. It was a breakout game for a very good player—good enough that his dad and Head Coach had to, grudgingly, allow us to talk about him.

Eddie Maxfield, Regis Jesuit

Captain and flyhalf Eddie Maxfield scored three tries as Regis Jesuit defeated Valor Christian in CIRA action.

Damian Saldana, Thunder Rugby

A massively active flanker for the undefeated Thunder Rugby team in Southern California, Saldana made tackles all over the place and helped keep the strong-running Belmont Shore team in check.

Grant Raboski, Fort Hunt

Fort Hunt defeated Richmond in pretty emphatic fashion, and Raboski, playing lock, was a rock for the Warriors.

Nate Comiskey, Danville

The sophomore wing (pictured 4th photo on left)  had a bit of a breakout game, showing some dynamic attacking flair and ability to finish off a score in a crucial win over Jesuit of Sacramento.

Corbin Smith, Fairfield Pegasi

The Fairfield flyhalf was an offensive force against Ridgefield in a Fairfield win, and he's done that before. Having scored seven tries in the last two games the hardworking, dedicated #10 is also an important leader for the Pegasi.

Benoni Mesfin, Dallas Jesuit

The powerful prop  (pictured 2nd at left) had a huge game in the Rangers' big win over Brother Martin. He nailed down the set piece and got it all started as Dallas Jesuit defeated the Louisiana state champs.
