Gamebreakers - HS Boys This Week

Three playoff tries for Schlegel and Regis Jesuit.

Here are some players who made an impact for their teams this week.

 

Corey Patton, North Meck, NC

A fast and agile center, Patton can turn a game on its head, and he helped North Meck win their final league game of the season to secure top seed in their division going into the state playoffs.

 

Parker Lang, Brownsburg, Ind.

The tenacious Brownsburg scrumhalf was a non-stop defender, aggressive runner, and vocal leader in marshaling the forwards as Brownsburg upset Penn and finished 3rd in the Midwest Championship. 

 

Avery Nielsen, Newberg, Ore.

One of the defensive leaders on the Newberg team, Nielsen helped lead Newberg to two comfortable wins in shortened games over the weekend to keep his side undefeated in league play.

 

Drew Schlegel, Regis Jesuit, Colo.

A hat trick of tries for center Schlegel helped propel Regis Jesuit of Colorado Springs in the Rugby Colorado semifinals.

 

Travis Heer and Adam Channel, Back Bay, Calif.

Two special members of of Back Bay’s dynamic backline, they helped lead Back Bay in a comeback win over Los Angeles to win the SoCal club title.

 

Owen Hundt, St. Edward, Ohio

St. Ed’s won the Midwest single-school championship with a massive team effort, but No. 8 excelled, powering through for tries and line-breaks, and helping his team upset defeat three teams ranked above them to win the title.

 

Jack Iscaro, Gonzaga, Md.

The HS All American prop was a force for Gonzaga and an inspirational leader as well as they beat top Ontario teams Saltfleet and Bill Crothers.

 

Juwan Johnson, Los Angeles, Calif.

The hooker who led LA and Mira Costa to almost-championships,

Johnson is a special talent and leader who has turned heads in every game he has played. He was instrumental in LA’s strong performance.

 

Charlie Siarkas, Maryland Exiles, Md.

Prop Charlie Siarkas scored an early try and set the tone as the Exiles hammered North Bay to win the Maryland state HS club championship.

 

Bobby Butchofsky, Westlake, Texas

A week late, but worth noting as the captain and No. 8 for Westlake sprained his ankle in the state semifinal on April 25 but gutted it out through the final the next day against Lake Travis to lead his team to a state championships.

 

Jon Cummins, Wando, SC

The junior outside center scored four tries for Wando in their quarterfinal defeat of Aiken in the South Carolina playoffs and then scored another in their 28-0 defeat of Chapin in the semis.
