Four Teams Lead The Way in Storer Classic

Cal, Cal Poly, UCLA, and Utah all went 2-0 in the Storer Classic Saturday at the UCLA campus.

Rain of course affected play during the day but the games had been moved to turf fields that allowed the tournament to proceed.

Utah had the toughest outing of the day of the 2-0 teams. After beating Loyola Marymount 55-0, the Utes battled a tough UC Santa Cruz side in the rain. Utah scored early in the game (all games were 40 minutes long) with a long counter-attack run after a UCSC kick. Utah's scrum started to show and shoved Loyola's pack back, leading to a penalty 10 minutes in.

A quick tap and run got them down to the tryline, A Utah knock-on game UCSC a scrum, but the Utes shoved them back again, got the ball, and were over to make it 10-0. Another long run put Utah in under the posts, and that was converted for a 17-0 halftime lead. UCSC had come close to scoring in the first half and did finally get one over. Utah saw no more points but held on 17-5.

UCLA put in two solid performances in shutting out UCSD 33-0 and UCSB 35-0.

For Cal Poly it was also a bit of a battle and they struggled a bit with the rain. In a sloppy, wet game with UCSC they emerged 7-0 winners, but then the Mustangs began to gallop a bit more in the second game, taking Loyola Marymount 54-0.

Cal beat UCSB 35-0 with two tries from No. 8 Luke Freeman within five minutes. Prop Nick Leusing pushed his way across and Dougie Brown was over two minutes later and it was 28-0 at halftime. Kealan O’Connell went 4-for-4 on conversions.

The scoring slowed down in the second half but Dom Paga touched down in the final minute. Cormac Saint converted.

Against UCSD Cal ran away with it 85-0. Eleven players scored an astonishing 13 tries. Prop Josh Mao opened up the scoring just 27 seconds in. Solomon Williams, Alex Aguero, and Matt Vranesh touched down with Alex Brundage converting three.

In the second half it was one-way traffic with Evan Weigold getting three. Ryan Marshall, Lance Hackett, Max Threlkeld, who only just joined the program this month, Tyler Lenk, and Paga all got over the tryling. Jack Casey scored a try and converted four, while Jack Openshaw converted three.

Sunday Cal Poly takes on Utah and UCLA plays Cal.
