The Rugby Virginia boys HS season is down to two teams, as Fort Hunt and West End will face off after both won their preliminary playoff games this past weekend.

West End took care of a combined Newport News / Norfolk side 34-7, and Western Loudoun/great Falls 47-5.

It was a similar story for Fort Hunt. The Warriors defeated a Legion/Richmond combined team 24-14, and then handled Vienna 50-0.

The two will face off on Sunday for the state title.

West End has been playing some solid rugby, performing well at the Gonzaga Classic, but will have a tall order in Fort Hunt.

“This Warriors team is really coming into its own down the stretch,” said Fort Hunt Head Coach Dale Roach. “The team really began to gel, and then our trip to Ireland cemented these men as a team. They get better every week and we are playing our best rugby now. Other than one important injury the team is strong and ready to compete for the State Championship.”

Charlie Martel has had a massive season for Fort Hunt and he is also a solid emotional leader in the backline. Michael Cunningham was their one big injury loss, but he has continued to help the team despite being unable to play, attending every practice.

With James Hughes playing a big game up front, Fort Hunt also has the imposing figures of Aaron Hale and George Heard in second row.

“They are vital to our lineout and excel on both defense and offense,” said Roach.

Nate Joy has been a pest (in a good way) as a flanker.
