Fifth Tournament Added to Women's World Series

World Rugby expanded the 2015-2016 HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series to five tournaments once more, assing a fifth and final stop at Clermont-Ferrand in France on May 28-29.

The late-May stop will be the final test for each nation’s qualifying women’s sevens team before they head to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

World Rugby Head of Competitions and Performance Mark Egan said: "This is one of the biggest years in rugby sevens' history for both the men's and women's game. With HSBC and DHL now on board as global sponsors, the women's game has reached a new level of competition and exposure ahead of Rio 2016.

"The five rounds will provide a crucial preparation platform for the teams that have already qualified for Rio and also help the teams that are preparing for the women's final Olympic repechage, which will take place in Ireland,” said Egan.

The HSBC Women’s Sevens Series first kicked off on December 3, 2015 in Dubai with Australia finishing in first, defeating Russia to win the Cup Final. The USA had a slow start to begin the season, taking 11th place in Dubai. The Eagles finished last year’s season one position short of automatic Olympic qualification, taking fifth place via tie-breaker to England.

The Women’s Eagles will look to rebound when they start the second leg of the series in Sao Paolo, BrazilFebruary 20 and 21, 2016. The Eagles will then have one month to prepare and train before defending their home turf at the U.S.’s stop in Atlanta starting April 8, 2016. Tickets for Atlanta 7s will go on saleThursday, January 7 and start at just $12.

Atlanta 7s is being held at Kennesaw State University and will showcase the top athletes the United States has to offer against the world’s best. More than just international rugby, the Atlanta 7s has involved much of the domestic rugby community over the past two years and 2016 will be no exception. Clinics and courses will be announced in the coming months, with the addition of a rugby festival offering opportunities for spectators and teams to play rugby around the international tournament. Individuals and team interested in competing in the Rugby Festival must RSVP via this form.
