In a game between two of the stronger teams in Southern California, Fallbrook overhauled Back Bay 27-13 to move to 1-0 in their conference, and set themselves up for a potential double championship.

Fallbrook won the Varsity Red division in the single-school half of the season, and now, with the same group of players, are in the club season. Beating Back Bay is a big step toward winning their South Gold conference, as they now face the San Diego Mustangs and San Diego Old Aztecs later on.

Back Bay ran out to a 13-10 lead which they held at halftime, and controlled the game for the first 25 minutes. It could have been a bigger lead, though, were it not for Falbrook's tenacious covr defense. Coach Mike Majewski said Fallbrook has been working on getting back onside when the opposition breaks through, and they did that well on Saturday.

"In the second half, our fitness started to come through," said Majewski. "We were able to crash the forwards up and send the ball wide and move together more as a team. We've been able to get the ball out of the rucks faster late in the game and that's really helped us."

With Trevor Rainwater being vocal at fullback and helping organize the defense, and with No. 8 and HS All American Steven Branham powering through and providing leadership, Fallbrook scored 17 unanswered points to win 27-13.

All of this was accomplished with just 18 players. After the varsity rugby season, several Fallbrook students move on to other sports. Only a core group has remained to play the second season.
