Early Clash of Leaders in Deep South

Week two in the Deep South will ask big questions of the teams that have started well.

Key among those will be when Louisiana-Lafayette visits Spring Hill.

Spring Hill logged an impressive 65-29 victory over a  shorthanded Troy, with scrumhalf Christian Cage causing problems for the opposition.

Meanwhile, Lafayette edged an in-form Tulane team 33-26.

“It was close the whole way through,” said center Rod Blouin. “Every time we scored it seemed like they’d come back and score too.”

Blouin said the matchup with Tulane is one the Ragin’ Cajuns look forward to as there is a good relationship between the two teams.

“It’s more like friends meeting up on the playground,” said Blouin.

While ULL looked good in the forwards, they struggled to get the ball out wide. Blouin, who plays inside center and saw the issues right up close, said it was mostly a case of new players getting the calls down pat.

“Later in the second half we started to make some breaks and do a little bit better,” said Blouin, who played his high school rugby for St. Thomas HS in Texas. “Against Spring Hill we’ve been working on fixing our scrums and just getting more familiar with each other in the backline.”

Leading the way for Lafayette in the forwards are Jonathan Jarrett and Murphy Bell, while Giancarlo scrumhalf Rodriguez and Shane Kennedy have played well in the backs.

Also in the Deep South, Louisiana Tech gets their first run-out, while 1-0 South Alabama hosts Troy.
