Eagles Chosen to Face Romania

BUCHAREST, Romania - USA Men's National Team Head Coach John Mitchell has named his lineup to face Romania Saturday at Stadionul Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest, bringing Todd Clever back as captain, and awarding new 15s caps to four players.

University of Indiana All America Bryce Campbell gets his first official cap at insidecenter. Former Notre Dame All American Nick Civetta gets his first cap at lock. USA 7s captain Madison Hughes gets his first cap at fullback. And USA 7s power-runner Martin Iosefo gets his first cap. According to USARugby.org, Iosefo becomes the 500th Eagle with his selection.

While it's a youngish team in terms of number of new caps, it's not an inexperienced team. Campbell has captained Indiana and toured with the All Americans and USA Selects. Hughes has captained the USA 7s team for two years, and was on the HS All Americans, USA U20s, and Collegiate All Americans. Hughes also showed some flashes of brilliance when he came on as a sub against the Maori All Blacks last Friday.

Iosefo has been a longtime 7s player touring the world - "I am really enjoying it," said Iosefo after the Maori All Blacks game. "Things are going really well and I really like playing 15s. It's more physical, but it's going well."

And Nick Civetta has been a professional in Italy and now England for several years.

"It's been a long time coming, but I knew I just needed to keep working," said Civetta after the Maori game, where he got his first USA run-out (not a cap because the Maori team is not an official international team).

Mitchell has made six changes to the team that lost 54-7 to the Maori. Joseph Taufete'e comes in at hooker in preference to James Hilterbrand - a move to add strength and power in the front row. Al McFarland comes in at blindside flanker, with Todd Clever moving to openside. McFarland, who has a reputation for getting a lot of work done in the gritty parts of the game, replaces Tony Lamborn. With Danny Barrett not making the trip to Romania, the Eagles needed a new No. 8, and Andrew Durutalo steps in there.

The halfback combination of Nate Augspurger and Will Holder returns, and while Campbell moves from #13 to #12, he remains, along with wing Iosefo. Changes in the backs include Thretton Palamo, the former University of Utah All American, who is playing professional in the UK at Bristol. Palamo is a big, elusive center and suits up at #13. Former Cal All American Blaine Scully comes in at right wing instead of Matai Leuta, who is on the subs bench, and Hughes replaces Mike Te'o at fullback.

On the bench, pros Eric Fry (who steps in for Alex Maughan, who didn't travel), Langilangi Haupeakui, and Samu Manoa come in. Manoa is a huge star, and a player you might expect to start, but he's just dropped into the team, and Mitchell seems to be easing him back in. Manoa will be an excellent impact sub.
