Eagle Players Of The Decade ... And More

Who were the best American rugby players of the decade?

Well, we're here to tell you. While we're still working on the (much harder) job of picking the Women's Teams of the decade, we're not waiting on everything else. So here are our men's 15s and 7s teams of the decade, plus reader votes on players of the 2010s.

Here goes:

Readers' Players Of The Decade:

Men's 7s: Danny Barrett

This was a relatively close vote between Barrett and Baker, but it speaks to how Barrett's toughness and straight-ahead style resonates with fans. Baker was two-time World 7s Player of the year, so you have to give a nod there. We at GRR World Headquarters would also like you to consider Carlin Isles. Why? Because when the USA team was not good at all, it was Isles who kept them in games, and it was Isles who made key plays to keep the Eagles in the World Series as a core team.

It's easy to forget that being a core team was in serious doubt just a few years ago. Isles has always answered the bell when it has run. But Barrett (or Baker) is an excellent choice.

Women's 7s: Alev Kelter

It's hard to imagine a player who has crossed over from another sport and become adept at so many aspects of play. Kelter not only moved from hockey (ice) to rugby and brought her athleticism and physicality; she learned to kick, quickly, and learned to be a playmaker and one who understood space and how to put teammates in space. She understood the breakdown, and did all of that in short order. She was so good at this that she made our list of nominees for 15s Player of the Decade too.

It was good to see a lot of votes for Jill Potter, as she was pretty special, too.

Women's 15s: Stacey Bridges

This was a very, very tight race between Bridges and Alycia Washington. Both are enormously popular players with a ton of skill and intelligence. it's a tossup, really, and was almost a tie. Bridges is a bit more of a brutal player, and Washington perhaps a bit more analytical, but both were multi-skilled, hardworking, and at times spectacular in a non-spectacular position of lock.

Men's 15s: Samu Manoa

Todd Clever was a trailblazer here and he finished second. Cam Dolan was consistently great throughout the decade. Blaine Scully led the Eagles in caps and was the captain and a consummate pro. But Samu was different. He didn't play for the Eagles as much as we'd have liked him to, but he was a trailblazer too. He was the best player in the Premiership for basically two seasons. He changed how teams played the game. Oh, and he made sure the Eagles made the 2015 Rugby World Cup with a 50-meter try.

This wasn't easy. There were some players who were almost as good as those we list. There are some positions where no one really took control. We could have put Titi Lamositele in at prop, but we think his best years are ahead of him and he's likely the guy for the 2020s. We could have put a number of players in at center, but that's the best list.

A note about Zack Test. If you're young, you might forget the days when the Eagles were good, but didn't have gamebreakers at every position. Test was the go-to guy sometimes when the USA didn't have a lot else. Yes the team has done well since he retired, but that's because of him.
