Dwenger over Penn Highlights Big Indiana Week

Rugby teams in Indiana are finally getting some serious game time, and now that the games are happening, there is a lot to see.

Dwenger vs Penn

While #18 Penn finally got a game in last week, it had been a month for #30 Dwenger without matches. And while you might think Dwenger would be undercooked, given that it was 85 degrees on Saturday and they were playing on Dwneger's turf field, maybe not.

The first half was slow as the teams measured each other up Dwenger took advantage of a dropped ball in-goal to score first. That was followed by a penalty try off a breakaway, and Penn had to be shaking their heads down 14-0. They certainly wanted to right the ship quickly and in the second half scored soon after the kickoff to make it 14-7.

But Dwenger was fit and quick and good at the breakdown. Wing Ben Jacquay, having his best game for Dwenger, scored two tries and Adam Schenkel help seal the victory with four conversions and calm leadership at flyhalf. Senior scrumhalf Charlie Zurbuch manged the breakdown with poise and accuracy, setting up Dwenger's attack. Senior Joe Eddy led the forwards with the most tackles and carries and Dwenger won 28-7. Oscar Perez and Kyle Eddy also touched down for Dwneger.

"After a month with no matches we were unsure how our boys would react to the heat and opulence of a Super League match," said Dwenger Head Coach Taylor Serres. "Our seniors stepped up and we were tough at the break down and our attack on offense was smooth and patient. I'm very proud of our boys and the game we played."

HSE/Fishers vs Zionsville

HSE/Fishers got two tries from Jack Seyferth, and another two from Hunter Lewis, who also converted two. Brewer Edwards and Eddie Nicholas also scored in a 34-0 shutout win earlier in the week.

Avon vs St. Xavier

This was a crossover game with Kentucky-based St. Xavier (not to be confused with the St. Xavier from Cincinnati). The Avon Black Swarm made it three in a row with a 39-0 shutout. In their last three games Avon (not to be confused with the Avon in Ohio) has outscored opponents 152-5. Avon played much of the game down a player due to a red card for a high tackle.

Elsewhere

Westfield handed Brownsburg a 50-7 defeat on Saturday, following up on Royal Irish beating Brownsburg 79-5 earlier in the week.

Next up in the Super League, Brownsburg meets Avon and Royal Irish takes on HSE/Fishers. Pendleton put in another strong showing with a 34-12 defeat of Carmel. See full game here>>. Having beaten both Avon and Westfield Pendleton is now 3-0.
