DIAA Playoffs - Our Picks

CSULB good enough to make the final? We think so. Kirby Winslow photo.

We're down to the DIAA quarterfinals, and by the end of the weekend we will have the final two teams for the May 9 final at Kennesaw State University.

It's a mishmash of teams in the QFs, as some teams qualified last fall, some recently, and some when they were least expected to. Here's a look at the teams, the matchups, and our picks.

Founder's Field, Pittsburgh

Central Florida v US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point). Kickoff 11am ET.

You know we love the USMMA. It's a great school and the athletes on the rugby team are dedicated, hard-working young men. They have been able to get back a couple of key veteran players from their semester at sea in order to be more ready for this playoff, and Kings Point has also managed to sneak in a bunch of 15s and 7s games at tournaments around the region. They haven't however, clicked, and you not only have to click to beat UCF, you have to click exactly right. Central Florida is very physical, can punish you several with vertical runners up the 1 and 2 channels, and this year the Knights have opened up their game a bit - as evidenced by their SIRC 7s victory. UCF is, frankly, a juggernaut. They've won two straight DIAA championships, beating Arizona and Lindenwood in the finals. We love Kings Point, but UCF is just too much.

Yale v West Virginia. Kickoff 12:45pm ET

Well no one expected Yale to be here, except maybe Yale. A new approach and a new self-belief pushed them through. They are much fitter than they were and their basic skills are much stronger. Now they take on a West Virginia team that is the Keystone conference champion, and playing in its final series of DIAA games before moving up to the DIA conference Rugby East. What WVU brings to the game is fitness, desire, and smart execution. The question is, however, whether the Mountaineers are ready to play a full weekend of 15s. They haven't played a 15s game since getting pilloried by Wheeling Jesuit over a month ago. They've been playing 7s, and their open field skills will be solid, but can they slog it out for 80 minutes?

This is our upset special. Yale may have been 2-5 in Ivy League play in the fall, but they are a different team now, and could well unseat WVU.

Regardless, we like Central Florida to win this bracket. In fact, we think they will win it by a considerable margin.

UC Davis, Davis, Calif.

UC Davis v Western Washington. Kickoff Noon PT

This is potentially a pick 'em game. Davis is playing some impressive rugby. Their team defense is most impressive, and they punish mistakes. They hit hard, and they perform in their set pieces. Western is perhaps less physical and relies a little more on their open-field game. But WWU can defend a little, too, and they can score. It really is a matchup of a relentless Davis team that rucks, tackles, and punishes, against a Western team that tackles well but also runs and kicks and passes to get what they want. It's a tossup.

Arkansas v Long Beach State. Kickoff 1:45pm PT

Arkansas battled their way to this playoff by beating one of their chief rivals and tying the other. The Razorbacks did it all with a lot of good set piece work and solid support running in the open field. But, they will find themselves against a very different team in Long Beach State. The 49ers are very fast, they hit very hard, and are fitter and more athletic than many of the teams Arkansas has played. The 49ers work well in the open field, and make smart decisions. We think they're good for this.

Right now this looks like CSULB's bracket to win. They can lose it, as this half of the bracket has four teams that have been playing steady, in-conference 15s. But of these teams, Davis and Long Beach have dominated through their playoffs, and of those, Long Beach has dominated more.

That's our pick, then - a UCF v Long Beach State final in Atlanta.
