De La Salle Shocks Jesuit

De La Salle players huddle up.

De La Salle won the single-school cup competition in Northern California, upsetting Jesuit of Sacramento 19-10 to win it.

This was the first time ever that De La Salle has beaten Jesuit in rugby.

Jesuit played well and were quick to the breakdowns and played with skill, but De La Salle was very physical and stuck to their defensive structure nicely.

"We’ve learned from our mistakes over the years playing them," said De La Salle Coach Ed Christiansen. "Jesuit takes a very quick ball out of a penalty and breakdown. All of their players can pass skillfully and accurately. They are clinical experts at taking advantage of opponent’s mistakes."

So the plan was to not make so many mistakes, and make the Jesuit ballcarriers and ruckers pay the price physically.

Center JJ Tofaeono was explosive with the ball in hand and broke through for several long runs that push Jesuit on their heels, and he was a terror with his tackling.

The 6-0, 240-lb sophomore was the backs player of the game. Flyhalf Mario Storti was very effective kicking, both to space and to get his team out of trouble, and was very active on defense.

"We took a page out of Jesuit’s book in effective kicking with the wind to pin them inside their 22 often," said Chrstiansen.

Wing Peter Mazolewski punched in two tries, showcasing his speed and elusiveness, while hooker and forwards player of the game, Logan Tatum, handled throwing into the lineout despite strong winds, and was effective around the breakdown. Good go-forward possession was at a premium and scrumhalf Elijah Prospero did well to dig the ball out of rucks and get it to the runners.

"All the boys played very well," added Christiansen. "It was a chess match for sure. Some of the best HS rugby I’ve ever seen."
