Corona Del Mar Win In Inaugural Game

Corona Del Mar HS won the team's inaugural league game beating San Juan 24-12.

The team was only just formed this school year. The Corona Del Mar football coach, who just won their division in the state playoffs in football, going 16-0, had been open to rugby, but it wasn't until two former Back Bay rugby players joined the football coaching staff that players understood that they needed a school-sanctioned club to get it going.

That's all settled now, and Back Bay U18 Coach Jeff Bonnett is now coaching the Corona Del mar team. He got them ready quickly.

"This is only our fourth time on the field," Bonnett said after the game. "We managed to come together pretty quick."

Bonnett, who won a national title with Back Bay last season, has brought in former Canada 7s coach Andrew Hall—Hall has moved to the area.

"So we've got a great backline coach and we've got a bunch of guys new to the game but don't have any bad habits," Bonnett said. "We have support, too. With St. John Bosco being a good example of a championship rugby team helping ceate a championship football team, we hope other schools will buy in."

Corona Del Mar never trailed in the game. Ross Asbjom got them on the board first and then Mike Wein scored. The try of the game might have been Dylan Wood's effort. Inexperienced in rugby,  Wod picked up at the base of the ruck around midfield and just kept going. That sealed the game. Jason Vicencio added an eightman pick to make it 24-12.

"It was a good experience for them," said Bonnett. "They learned that we share a meal with the opposing team after the game, and that was new for them. They learned that the players help break down the field when we're done, and that was new. It's a different culture, but they embraced it and have bought in."

Also this weekend, Wilson HS beat Warren 49-12 and Los Alamitos won 50-10 over Marina HS.
