Contenders Emerging in SoCal

San Clemente is atop the Southern California Single-School league after beating San Juan in convincing fashion.

San Clemente's depth allowed them to keep their standard up against a San Juan team that couldn't quite keep pace. Brayden Berry was very good both in his play and as a leader. After San Clemente subbed both of their captains off at halftime it was Berry who took on the mantle of the captaincy and did well as the changed lineup outscored San Marcos 20-0 in the second half to win it 59-0.

The prop also showed off his kicking skills with the final conversion of the game.

"There were a few things we learned about ourselves that we need to polish up," said Head Coach Stuart Proctor.

Los Alamitos is leading the way so far in the Multi-School varsity league in SoCal. After taking care of John Muir HS, Los Al is now 3-0 in league play.

Chasing them is likely Carlsbad, which played some non-conference games before entering league action against San Juan HS.

Carlsbad Thunder Head Coach Josh Williams said his team rebounded nicely from last week's loss to Torrey Pines

"It was a good response after playing so poorly last week," said Williams. Despite the 68-7 scoreline, the game was quite competitive said Williams.

San Juan started 10 sophomores and only three seniors and the game, said Head Coach Sam McMillan, was "a night of big learnings for our young players and me as a coach. Carlsbad's big forwards and backs played really well; good interplay and lots of front-foot ball which we struggled to slow down."

Penalties hurt San Juan but they did get a big-hearted effort from scrumhalf Cole Parham.

Carlsbad, meanwhile, saw flanker/hooker Ray Taele play well with a lot of confidence, while lock Qeintin Johnson and prop Mikey Tinoisamoa also were very effective.

Next week, San Clemente will take on Torrey Pines, a squad that beat Carlsbad last week and won via forfeit this week; that will be a massive test for both.

"The boys can't wait," said Proctor.

Los Al takes on Clairemont while Carlsbad plays Murrieta.
