Conference Winners Sunday

It was a busy Sunday in Men’s DII college rugby, as all but three national playoff positions were decided.

In the Tri-State Conference, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated rivals Molloy 29-22 to win the Tri-State Conference and book a place in the national playoffs. RPI had started their league season with a loss, but that was their only loss of the season as the Engineers won seven in a row after that.

In the Mid-Atlantic, Rowan defeated IUP 39-10 in a tough final. Both teams make the national playoffs, but Rowan gets a spot in the Round of 16.

In the Northern Lights in Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth got a forfeit win over MSU Mankato, who didn’t play the semifinal on Saturday. Meanwhile, Winona State played North Dakota State in a very tough game, winning 20-19. So there was little surprise that the #1-ranked Duluth team won 64-0 on Sunday. Both Duluth and Winona will make the national playoffs.

In the WIIL Conference, Wisconsin-Whitewater won a tough final against Lindenwood-Belleville 45-20. This is the first season of any rugby for Lindenwood-Belleville, and while they have a paid coach and a varsity program, their entire team is freshmen. The Lynx did very well to make the final, but an experienced Whitewater team held them off.

Both Whitewater and Lindenwood-Belleville make the national playoffs, and so does Northern Iowa. After playing Whitewater tough in the semis, UNI defeated Northern Michigan 46-20 to win 3rd and a spot in the first round of national playoffs.

In the Cardinals Conference, Old Dominion suffered an early injury to their scrumhalf and captain Michael Wagner and found it difficult to keep up with VMI late. ODU led 19-10 at halftime but VMI had a torrid second half to win 50-26.

And UNC-Wilmington came back from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Coastal Carolina 23-17. The Seahawks just kept working their pattern and with flanker Tom McCrimmon having a superb game, made it through. That gave UNC-W the Southern Conference title, while Coastal Carolina also enters the national playoffs with a play-in against Capital #2 Salisbury.
