College 7s Latest: UMW, Citadel, Wheeling and More

The UMW 7s team had a good day.

Collegiate 7s is getting underway and we had some action this weekend—here's how it shook down.

Warmup Time

Teams are looking for non-tournament ways to warm up and one example was at The Citadel, where the rugby program ran out two teams against College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina. Citadel B went a creditable 1-1 and Citadel's A-side won both games.

Citadel's As beat College of Charleston 35-5 and Coastal Carolina 38-7. Grand Boudon scored three tries on the day with Noah Mills and Logan Trieber each adding two. Josh Desmore, Chris Werder, Kyle Goodwin, Graham Blondes, Gage Gibson, and JP Scott also scored.

Chesapeake #1

Mary Washington won the first Chesapeake Conference tournament in impressive fashion, beating VMI, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Tech, and, in the final, Mount St. Mary's. Only The Mount was really close (17-5), while Wilmington was the only team to score twice against the Mothers. UMW's overall day was 5-0, 174 points for and 20 against with two shutouts. MSM was almost as dominant, losing only once and outscoring opponents 117-44. Their closest game was their 12-5 semifinal win over Southern Virginia. SVU ended up 3rd over Virginia Tech.

This tournament was open to teams outside the Chesapeake Conference and St. Joseph's from the MARC did well, going 2-1 in Pool Play. With three pools of four teams, the fourth semifinal team was the best 2nd-place team. UMW and MSM won their pools, and SVU and Virginia Tech tied 17-17, leaving both teams at 2-0-1.

Southern Virginia won the tiebreaker, but Tech had a better record than St. Joe's, leaving SJU to play UNC Wilmington for 5th, a game they won 22-17.

UMW had a good day, beating Longwood and Christopher Newport in two 15s games as well as winning in 7s.

Conn Foster, Tobey Barnfield-Lee, Lloyd Stephens, Rory Naylor, Lewis Naylor, Seamus Brennan, Adam Warner, Adam Deacon, and Sebastian Schefermann all showed well in 7s. Schefferman and Foster were instrumental in the semifinal win over SVU and Foster's 70-meter run for a try was crucial in the final.

Pitt Dome 7s

Wheeling University ran the table at the Pitt Dome 7s, beating Pitt Grey 38-0, Dayton 36-0, West Chester 41-5, and Pitt Blue 24-12.
