Cathedral Puts Fallbrook to the Sword

Dylan Fortune led from the front for the Dons.

In a much anticipated rematch between the Cathedral Catholic Dons and Fallbrook Warriors, the Dons topped the Warriors 76-10 Friday night at Manchester Stadium.

Week one of the SCIRF 2022 season saw the Warriors beat the Dons with their strong defense. Friday night the Warriors again played a strong defensive game, but the unrelenting offensive pressure by the Dons turned out to be the difference in a game in which all the Dons saw game time to win their varsity letters.

The first 15 minutes of the game saw the Warrior defense hold until flyhalf Lewis Case broke the deadlock with a slicing run through the defense, which was quickly followed up with captain Dylan Fortune charging over for his team's second and a 12-0 Dons lead. Fallbrook immediately fought back dotting down in the corner after a peel from a maul, making it 12-5. Again the Dons offense started to make inroads. Fortune scored again and it was 19-5  Exceptional ball movement by the Dons throughout the remainder of the first half allowed the Dons to end the half up 45 -5 as junior Victory Johnson and sophomore Riley Leyva dotted down for their first tries of the season.

Cathedral Head Coach Glenn Irvine said that the Dons learned some valuable lessons from their first encounter with the Warriors, and with Fortune, focused their efforts on identifying areas for improvement in the overall game preparations and  practices. This all paid dividends over the course of the season. Case, who scored two tries, ran the attack superbly and orchestrated the back moves, while Spencer Huntley converted seven tries.

Having improved to 3-1 Cathedral will finish this weekend in 1st place, having earned four bonus points in their four games. St. Augustine, which might also end the weekend 3-1, won't be able to equal the Dons' points total.  Cathedral next takes on a revitalized La Costa Canyon team in a mid-week clash and then Mira Costa on Saturday. They will then finish the regular season against St. Augustine and then look to the SCIRF final.
