The West Coast 7s series kicks off this weekend with 19 teams in action.

There is a four-team women's bracket including Stanford, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, and UCSB, and also a three-team men's development bracket. But the biggest bracket by far is the 12-team men's collegiate bracket. Hosts Cal Poly heads up one pool, and Saint Mary's heads up another. Cal has traditionally done extremely well in this event and, as is their habit, they enter two teams in this tournament, each one being the top seed in their pool.

The pools are:

Pool A: Cal, Gaels, Sacramento State
Pool B: Cal Poly, Cal State Long Beach, San Diego State
Pool C: Saint Mary's, Southern California, UC Santa Barbara
Pool D: Bears, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz

“The first tournament of the year is about more than victory and standings for our program,” said Cal senior Max Schumacher. “It’s about getting every player a chance to put on the Blue & Gold, whether it’s for the first time or for the 100th time, to demonstrate the talent and the hard work we have put in as a team. “t has been a full year since we’ve had the opportunity to play sevens as a team, so there is a lot of positive anticipation among the boys."
