Cal Edges UCLA for PAC 7s Title

For the eighth time in nine tournaments, the Cal Golden Bears have won the PAC Rugby 7s tournament, beating UCLA in the final 10-0.

It was a competitive tournament, and UCLA certainly produced a strong defensive performance in the championship match. Cal needed that shutout to get out of there.

"UCLA is potent, so keeping them in check is something to build upon," Cal Head Coach Jack Clark said. "I thought we were mostly solid throughout the weekend and the boys should feel good about their performance. We'll put 7s behind us for awhile now and turn our focus to fifteens."

Cal beat Oregon 27-7, USC 34-5, and Utah 36-5 in pool play on Saturday, and then beat Arizona 27-5 in the semis.

UCLA, meanwhile, shut out Stanford 27-0, beat Oregon State 46-7, and edged Arizona 17-12 to win their pool. In the semis they took on Oregon, winning 26-12.

"I thought we could beat Cal," said UCLA Head Coach Adam Ashe. "We didn't play our best in the final; I thought we struggled to create opportunities. But credit to Cal on their well-organized defense. I was really proud of the boys' effort throughout the whole tournament."

Lucas Lacamp was excellent all day for the Bruins, scored eight tries, and got invited to Eagle 7s camp. Austin Kell was also impressive. But the entire Cal squad, especially on defense, was the class of the competition. Cal only allowed 22 points through all five games.

"Coming into today, we knew we needed to focus on defense and communications on our brackets," Cal senior Sam Golla said. "We couldn't overlook anyone in this tournament and I think we did a good job of building upon our performance throughout. Moving into next semester, we can't become complacent. We need to get back to work and prepare for 15s in the spring."

Max Schumacher led Cal with six tries, although he scored four of them in one game. Twelve different Bears scored tries on the weekend. Schumacher and Golla were the try-scorers in the final.

In other action, Arizona beat Oregon 33-10 to take 3rd. Utah took the Plate, or 5th. After going 1-2 in pool play and looking somewhat iffy in doing so (they edged USC 12-10), the Utes picked it up on Sunday, beating Stanford 22-12 and Oregon State 25-5 to finish strong.

USC took the Shield, or 9th. After losing to Oregon State in the Plate semis the Trojans beat Stanford 24-7 in their final game of the tournament.
