A big second half saw Brunswick win the Ohio Girls High School State Club Championship at Fortess Obetz Saturday as the Valkyries pulled away from the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets 39-19.

The Valkyries 12-7 lead early in the first half and a snappy backline move saw flyhalf Marian Clear set up center Sophia Pomeroy to make it 17-7. But Perrysburg responded. After a penalty against the Yellow Jackets that resulted in a yellow card, Brunswick missed touch and Perrysburg marched down the field to put scrumhalf Jazelle Shepler over on a tap penalty move. Lulu Zeisloft added the extras to make it 17-14 at halftime.

But the game-changer came at the start of the second half, when the Brunswick squad executed back-to-back team tries, ensuring Brunswick would not relinquish the lead.

Pomeroy, Cadence Satow, and Lyla Snider were among the try-scorers while scrumhalf Marissa Hudson added two conversions.

For Perrysburg, Shepler and Stella Skolmowski scored key tries and Zoe Zeisloft was aeffective kicking for points.

The Valkyries' victory, however, was not just a result of the players who made it onto the scoresheet. Flanker Sierra Baranyai was defensive powerhouse while Cleary at flyhalf ran the team's attack smartly. Forward Linda Dang was a driving force on the field, and she was also a calming influence when Perrysburg made it close at halftime.

"We were getting in our heads and we told ourselves to calm down, calm the penalties down, and it worked," Dang said.

Marian Cleary also commended the freshmen centers, Pomeroy and Sarah King, saying, "I am lucky to have those kinds of players with me."
