Brother Martin moved to 5-0 in the Louisiana boys HS league with a tough 14-7 victory over New Orleans Jesuit Wednesday night.

After scoring over 34 points per game in their first four league matches, Brother Martin was held to just two tries by a difficult Jesuit team.

Brother Martin used its pick-and-go attack to gain tough yards and score their first try. Senior prop Jacob Schmidt powered over and wing John Rink converted. Brother Martin worked the ball down the field again and used its pick-and-go attack to good effect and made it 14-0 when Senior prop John Authement finished it off. Rink was good again on the conversion.

Despite several more opportunities to score, Brother Martin was held out by a tenacious Jesuit goalline defense, and the teams entered halftime with the score at 14-0.

With the wind at their backs Jesuit kicked deep to begin the second half and Brother Martin struggled to get under the kick. Jesuit's chasers were on it and raced in to grab the ball and score. That made it 14-7. Somehow that was the end of the scoring. Both teams had chances to add more to the scoreline but the defense at the tryline was very good.

For Jesuit this was a chance lost as they could have tightened up the league with a win. The two teams have met twice so far this season with Brother Martin winning both games, but by a total of only eight points.

With only three regular-season games left Brother Martin has secured the top seed in the regular season. And the question of what the semifinal matchups will be is almost settled, too. St. Paul's, currently sitting in 2nd thanks to a 58-11 defeat of the Bayou Hurricanes a week ago, has two more games to play to confirm that position, while Jesuit, just two points behind, also has two games. If Jesuit loses to St. Paul's and then to the Hurricanes, then the Hurricanes can move into 3rd and take on St. Paul's in the semis. The more likely scenario is that St. Paul's remains in 2nd, Jesuit in 3rd, and those two face off April 14 and then against April 24 in the semis.
