Blue Ridge Conference Joins CGRU

Six teams join the CGRU.

The Blue Ridge women's collegiate conference has officially joined the Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union following a vote of member clubs.

CGRU already oversees a women's D2 competition that includes College of Charleston, Appalachian State, UNC Charlotte, and UNC Wilmington. Meanwhile, the Bllue Ridge conference consists of six D1 teams: Virginia, North Carolina, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, James Madison, and NC State.

The move, said Scott Conway, who runs communications for the CGRU, was designed to expand the CGRU and also share some of the administrative load. Nancy Kechner, Head Coach of Virginia, has been running the Blue Ridge for years, and it's a lot of work for one person. Conway said the technological and admin backup the CGRU can provide will make things easier for Kechner and the teams as a whole.

The Blue Ridge Conference will remain a Women's College D1 conference under CRAA. The conference plays 15s in both the fall and the spring. Currently Virginia leads the Blue Ridge East with a 3-0 record, and Virginia Tech leads the West, also with a 3-0 record. The playoffs are set for March 27.
