The University of Georgia shook up the SCRC somewhat with a 34-15 upset of the University of Florida Saturday.

“We haven’t beaten them in five years, so I guess you could call it an upset,” said Georgia Coach Jesse Posnansky. Also in the SCRC, Tennessee throttled Vanderbilt 72-3, and Mississippi State handed Ole Miss a humbling 45-7 defeat. As often happens in the SCRC, all of this weekend’s winners were the home team, and in fact, so far this season of the ten SCRC games played, the visiting team has won twice.

For Georgia, the victory over Florida was a big one, moving the Bulldogs to 2-1.

Posnansky said the key was that his team’s defensive front was aggressive and well organized.

“Last year we got caught with overloads, so every practice we’ve been working on our defensive structure and putting pressure on the opposing team,” said the coach. “Our structure was really good today; we gave them no space to work with.”

Posnansky said the result isn’t an indication that Georgia has arrived, but perhaps shows that the Bulldogs are on the way up.

“Last year was a down year for us,” he said. “We feel like we made a statement today.”

Lock/prop Obum Imonugo was player of the game and a powerful presence, and Jack Jones also shone for Georgia, but Posnansky said his team also gave up way too many penalties, and will need to clean that up when they play tougher opponents.

Still it’s an impressive result for the Bulldogs, who have already lost to South Carolina, and will need to overhaul Tennessee if they want to think about conference playoffs.
