Big Ten Latest - Blowouts All Around

The Big Ten Universities Conference is quickly becoming a three-horse race to the top, with a fourth horse chugging along trying to catch up.

Indiana and Ohio State remained undefeated after big victories Saturday, while Wisconsin was idle and stayed at 2-0, Michigan improved to 2-1 with a blowout victory over Minnesota.

For Michigan, Matt Kasten scored two tries and seven conversions for 24 points. Jamie Demers scored two, while Jeremy Reid kept making big dreaks to set up scorers in a 59-5 victory. That was nowhere near the biggest win in conference play. That honor belonged to Indiana, which crushed 123-10. Indiana scored 19 tries from 11 different players. Jake Hidalgo scored three and Jake Garwood, Teddy Terezis, Mitch Graham, Johnathon Abbey, and Andrew Rusk all scored two. Terezis kicked 14 conversions for a 38-point personal haul.

Meanwhile, Ohio State kept pace with a 77-15 win over Michigan State, paced by some nice combination work from Ronan Forrestal and JoJo Eramo. OSU Coach Tom Rooney said the team is playing well offensively but needs to be better on defense.

"We're playing a good system," said Rooney. "The kids are getting better, especially with our continuity and who is playing what position. We're pretty much set now, but it took us a while. We've had five position changes since the [open-week] Bowling Green game."

Eramo has been playing exceptionally well, said Rooney, but Michigan State keyed on him well.

"That's going to happen, so what was nice was to see our fullback [Forestal] and out outside center [Mike Matthews] react."

Matthews, a freshmen from St. Igantius in Cleveland, had his best defensive game and was solid on offense, but will want to forget a long, juking run that ended with him spilling the ball at the tryline.

Still, said Rooney, Matthews and the backs adjusted nicely to having one of their go-to guys being bottle up a little.

So it's clear now that there is a big divide between the top half and the bottom half of the Big Ten. And we won't really see how the top teams stack up for a few weeks. On October 24 Ohio State hosts Wisconsin. And then in November Indiana plays Wisconsin. But who is really the strongest may not be evident until the playoffs come.
