Big Scores In Women DI Quarters

Four teams are set for Sunday’s Women’s DI College semifinals after the top teams basically rolled through.

Only one game Navy vs. Davenport, was close, and that game was won by 23 points.

The US Naval Academy and Davenport played it close through the first half. Navy wing Ciara Enninful opened the scoring and Davenport fullback Megan Bird equalized. Moments later Navy nudged ahead with a try from center Katelyn McKinley, only to see Davenport No. 8 Bethany Gable and flanker Ashleigh DeWitt score to put Davenport ahead 15-12.

McKinley notched her second and Navy led 19-15 at halftime.

The second half was almost all Navy. McKinley scored her third, and then Ashleigh Crawford, Ana Olszewski, and then Enninful with her second to make it 45-15. Bird added a try for Davenport with time up.

Navy will face UConn, who beat Pitt 67-5. the Huskies burned Pitt out wide repeatedly, and wing raced in for six tries. Left wing Keisha Durden added two, while fullback Gorman converted six.

On the other side of the bracket, Minnesota ran out to a 19-0 lead in the first half, scored two more in the second half, and held on 34-7.

And defending fall champion Air Force cruised through to the semis, beating Indiana 67-0.

Certainly the fact that Air Force shut out Indiana is evidence that the Zoomies are to be reckoned with again. But they can score, too. Center Jaqueline Hamby scored two tries, seven conversions, and a penalty goal for 27 points all on her own. Inside center Adrienne Yoder scored two tries in quick succession in the first half, and wing Sarah Stinson scored the first and the last tries of the day as Air Force was dominant.

There’ll be a new finalist this year as Davenport, which finished 2nd to Air Force in 2018, is out, but the remaining three teams will all have to get through an excellent Air Force Academy team that went all the way in 2018.
