Big Rivers Remains Tight After Week 2 Action

It remains tight in the Big Rivers as we saw three competitive games in this NCR D1 conference.

Marian were pipped 26-21 by Principia to move the Thunder Chickens to 2-0 in the conference and dropping the Knights to 1-1.

Wheeling defeated Thomas More 36-22 to open their conference account.

"Starting with tougher games showed us those things we needed to fix," said Wheeling Head Coach Mike Geibel about his team's preseason losses to Queens and Mary Washington. "It's a tough lesson early on that pays off later. Playing those tough matches to start the season, and coming out pretty much fully healthy, was a much better preparation for us than if we had a 'warmup' match against a team that wouldn't push us as hard. And then of course after two losses, the hunger to win once the conference season started was much higher."

It was Senior Night at Wheeling, as well, and a very successful one. Next up for Wheeling is Rio Grande.

Iowa Central CC, meanwhile, rebounded from a loss to Principia to defeat Aquinas 43-22.

Head Coach Brent Nelson praised his team's chemistry, saying they are starting to play more as a unit.

"We also felt we weren't the best in support last weekend, and focused on securing the ball this week in practice," Nelson explained. "We did well with that and were able to string some phases together."

Aquinas scored all of their points in the second half, but Iowa Central had built up a good enough lead by then.
