Bentley, Providence, SoConn Battle in RNE

Bentley has been outstanding all fall.

Don't you just love it when it all comes together?

Three teams are in contention for the Rugby Northeast conference title, and those three teams all play each other in the next two weeks.

Bentley defeated Bryant Sunday 36-5 to move to 6-0 in the conference. They sit tied with Providence, also 6-0, but have a superior points difference.

"Bryant is a tough team and we had to play well to beat them," said Bentley Head Coach Brian Pendergast. "We made a few mistakes, but things are going well. We have no superstars; we're playing well as a team."

Bentley pays Providence on November 4, but before they do that, they will have to get through Southern Connecticut. SoConn may have lost to Providence on September 16 by a score of 29-13,  but they have steadily improved. Saturday's 40-3 defeat of UMass-Lowell put SoConn at 5-1.

Co-captain Noah Fleischer-Cerino said the result against Lowell is a reflection of how confident the team is feeling.

"This can be tough early in the season as players get moved around a lot, but by the third week or so we'd solidified our team and started to really come together," he said.

Flyhalf Dylan Carroll has been playing superbly and his goalkicking is about as accurate as it can be.

"He's on fire right now," said Fleischer-Cerino.

No. 8 and co-captain Mike Sullivan has been a powerhouse, and center Saemoo Smith has solidified the backline.

"We're a young team," said Fleischer-Cerino. "We only graduated a couple of seniors and we'll only graduate a couple this year. We feel really good about where we are."

SoConn plays Bentley on Saturday, while Providence faces Lowell. Then the next weekend Providence plays Bentley, and SoConn faces 1-4 St. Mike's.

"The good news is we feel we have most of our destiny in our hands," said Fleischer-Cerino. "But we are also rooting for Lowell a little bit."

There is no playoff in the Rugby Northeast, so the winner of the standings wins the conference. There's reason to expect that the #2 team in the conference will get a wild card playoff spot, so even with a loss teams have plenty to play for.
