All-Time American List: MA Sorensen

MA Sorensen, center, with Eagle front-rowers Tricia Turton and Liz Kirk.

Maryann Sorensen embraced the role of a prop forward like few before or after.

An intelligent, witty, trailblazing athlete, Sorensen began her rugby career at the College of William and Mary, being a part of the frst ever women's rugby team there. She went on to medical school and continues her medical career to this day. At the same time she continued to play through the 1970s and 1980s. She was an established top-level player well before USA Rugby fielded a women's national team, but she remained in the gamer to help lead the Eagles to a Rugby World Cup title in 1991.

Sorensen continued to play through the 1990s and was on the USA team in 1994 and 1998, where the Eagles made the World Cup final.

After that she went into coaching and was successful there. The MA Sorensen Award for the nation's best women's collegiate player is named after her.
