All Around NIRA: Another Win for Sacred Heart

Alyssa Cunningham continues to lead SHU.

Sacred Heart has backed up their opening salvo in NIRA with another big win, defeating Brown University 22-8 to move to 2-0.

The Pioneers have now beaten both Army and Brown, benefiting from a big second half to get their second victory.

Sophomore Ashley Torres-Brown scored two tries while Reese Torticill and Makena Wright also touched down.

It was a scoreless game for the first quarter until Torres-Brown went over to stake SHU to a 5-0 lead. Brown's Delaney Dill equalized just a few minutes later and that 5-5 score held until the halftime break.

Brown then took the lead with a penalty early in the second half from Kendall Cunningham. But the Pioneers responded nicely with Torticill going over. Alyssa Cunningham converted and SHY led 12-8.

In the 64th minute Torres-Brown scored her second and nine minutes later Wright scored to finish it off.

"I'm proud of the way we came back," said Sacred Heart Head Coach Michelle Reed. "We started slow, the energy and the heat affected us, but probably about 45 minutes in, we came out and charged. We kept the energy and kept going. I was very proud of that because of the heat and how competitive Brown is, and to see our team keep the charge and keep going was fantastic."

In a close one in DI Mount St. Mary's edged Princeton 27-26 behind a huge defensive performance from Emma Jacobs. Dartmouth opened their NIRA account with a 41-12 defeat of Army, which drops to 0-2.

DII team New Haven won 45-7 over University of New England, while defending DIII champs Bowdoin provided new Head Coach Laura Miller with her first victory, 55-5 over Frostburg State. Lulu Linkas, Colleen Doucette, Maggie Norton, and Sniya Ridley all scored two tries each in the win.
