USA Selects Named for ARC

SEATTLE, Wash. – Mike Tolkin and the Men’s Eagles coaching staff have called 27 players to the Eagles Select XV selection camp Oct. 4-7 for the 2014 IRB Americas Rugby Championship.

Brian Doyle, Zach Fenoglio, Troy Hall, Graham Harriman, Olive Kilifi, Chad London, Tim Maupin, Adam Siddall, Louis Stanfill, Kyle Sumsion, Andrew and Shalom Suniula, Phil Thiel, and Nick Wallace represent the capped Eagles contingent, while Andrew Durutalo and Zach Test will catch up with the team in Langford following the Men’s Eagles Sevens’ trip to Gold Coast Oct. 11-12.

Doyle, who has not made an appearance for the Eagles since the Rugby World Cup Qualifier series against Canada in August 2013 due to injury, is one of three players from American Rugby Premiership’s New York Athletic Club. Hall and Justin Hundley will also miss Saturday’s match against Boston Rugby to attend the camp on the west coast.

Siddall has had his own time away from the pitch following injury and has not played an international match with the Eagles since 2013, during which he earned six caps (as well as a start against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks) and scored 37 points. After sustaining a leg injury in the first match of the Eagles’ Summer Series against Scotland, Andrew Suniula has been able to recover for selection to the ARC squad.

“They haven’t played much rugby so this ARC is going to be part of that process of getting them back to 100-percent form,” Tolkin said.

Recently signed to a short-term contract at Saracens in England, Thiel will be made available for the ARC. The hooker acted as team captain for one of the matches in British Columbia last year, where the Eagles Select XV finished in second with wins against Canada and Uruguay.

New faces to a senior camp include Ben Cima, Lemoto Filikitonga, Angus MacLellan, and Ben Tarr, all four of whom have recently toured with USA Rugby age-grade teams.

Flyhalf Cima traveled to Argentina with Salty Thompson’s High School All-Americans three months after securing a third-place finish at the 2014 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Hong Kong with Billy Millard’s AIG Men’s Junior All-Americans. Tarr was also a member of the MJAAs at that tournament, as was Colorado State’s All-American standout, Ben Pinkelman.

While MacLellan stars for Davenport University, he has been a member of the two most recent AIG Men’s Collegiate All-American tours to New Zealand and the New England area. Filikitonga went to France with the MJAAs last year for the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship.

“There’s room for them to step in and move into the next level,” Tolkin said. “They can start being exposed to this and we want to see how they perform. There’s no pressure on these guys; we’re not expecting them to step in and dominate or be major figures. At the same time, we want to see that they show the potential of continuous growth at the next level.”

Seattle Saracens will host a scrimmage for players in camp Monday, Oct. 6, before Tolkin’s selected team heads north of the border to Rugby Canada’s facilities in Langford.
