Washington Loggers Prep for Serevi Cup

Held during the senior Club 7s Championships, the Serevi Cup is a two-bracket high school 7s tournament hosted at the Starfire Sports Complex, where the club nationals will also be held.

The Boys Bracket is mostly select sides from the Northwest, but some from father afield. The Washington Loggers select side program will field two teams. Coach Steve Brennan said the teams will be split along A-side and B-side lines, with the majority of the A-side having already played 7s for the Loggers at the Las Vegas Invitational in January.

“The timing of the tournament is good for us because it’s not too close to football so a lot of players are interested,” Brennan told Goff Rugby Report. “The A-side has a lot of seniors, so it will be an experienced team.”

Trent Barnes, who has been training at Central Washington in anticipation of his first season with the Wildcats, will play in the tournament. Dom Linstrom of Kent, Alfonso Cornu of Eastside, brothers Matt and Will Brennan of Seattle, and Kyle Saalfeld of Kent highlight a well-rounded team. It’s not clear if Brian Nault will play. The High School All American who captained the team against Italy U18s, is just back from traveling with the HSAA team and his fitness has to be confirmed.

On the B-side, Brennan is looking to field talented rugby players who are developing, or who don’t normally play 7s. Of the latter group, Derise Fuga, a prop for the Loggers 15s team and the HS All Americans, will take on the role that Titi Lamositele took on for the Loggers 7s team - the big battering ram you wouldn’t expect to play 7s.

“It’s a good team,” said Brennan, “and I am excited to see what they can do. But I am also really excited to see Oregon. We’ve never played an Oregon select side in 7s, and that’s going to be something to look forward to.”
