BOULDER, Colo. – USA Rugby confirmed Thursday a Men's DII college championships system to finish in the fall, and a fall playoff system for Men's DI college teams playing in the fall, as well as Women's DI and DII college teams playing in the fall.

The College Management Council approved the championship pathways for member clubs, allowing winners of the fall and spring Regionals to meet May 8-10, 2015, to contest the USA Rugby Collegiate National Championships.

“This new format will allow all of our participating college teams to play an extensive schedule of high-level rugby during the season that best suits their preferences,” USA Rugby Collegiate Director Rich Cortez said. “In addition, continuing to have the Men’s Division II National Championship in the fall serves those teams as the overwhelming majority of DII men’s teams prefer to have a fall National Championship. We look forward to working with our many hosts during the upcoming season.”

The Men’s DII National Championship begins with the Round of 16 Nov. 21-23. The Women’s Division I and II and Men’s Division IAA fall Regional Round of 16 will take place the same weekend.

The fall Regional semifinals and finals are set for Dec. 5-7 – alongside the Men’s DII National Championship –with the Women’s DI and DII and Men’s DIAA finalists playing for a spot in their respective National Championships May 8-10, 2015.

The Women’s DI and DII spring Regional Round of 16 is scheduled for April 10-12. A week later, the Men’s DIAA Quarterfinals will be played alongside the Women’s DIA Quarterfinals and Semifinals. The spring Regional Semifinals and Finals for Women’s DI and DII and Men’s DIAA will be held April 24-26, two weeks prior to the National Championships.

Five champions – in Men’s D1A, DIAA, and Women’s DIA, DI, and DII – will be crowned at the National Championships in May. The fall Regional winners will play the second-place team of the spring Regionals, and vice versa for the other Semifinals.

All teams in good standing with USA Rugby are eligible for entry to their respective Regionals with no additional fee.

“We want to see the best collegiate rugby clubs play each other and holding Regional competitions and settling the national championship on one weekend in the spring will provide the perfect avenue to do that,” Cortez said. “Furthermore, our college sponsors and partners will have another opportunity to showcase themselves and the USA Rugby National Championships. The split season pathway will also allow more teams to adequately prepare for the College 7s National Championship.”

The USA Rugby College 7s National Championships are tentatively scheduled for May 23-25, 2015 – Memorial Day weekend.
