Norwich Puts 34 Pts Between It and Army

Norwich banked its first win of the DI Northeast Women’s Rugby Conference (NWRC) season, taking down Army 39-5 (0-1) at West Point. The Vermont Cadets improved to 4-0 all-time against the New York Cadets.

Norwich built a 20-point lead in the first half and nearly replicated the effort in the second. Three Norwich forwards – flanker Sophie Mundell, front row Ally Murphy and lock Val McGuire – scored two tries apiece, while freshman wing Denisse Zambon added a five-pointer. Junior flyhalf Hannah Bell hit two of seven conversions.

Army got its lone points of the game late in the second half, when the team’s top finisher, wing Kate Roose, blocked a clearance kick and returned it to the try zone.

Norwich is 2-1 overall, losing a friendly 43-27 to Penn State before pummeling Dartmouth 74-10. Army drops to 0-2, having also lost to Quinnipiac 50-17 two weekends ago.

"On a day like today, it was just difficult to handle the ball," Army coach Bill LeClerc told Army Athletics. "The conditions made it difficult to play the way we wanted to play.

"We were a little naïve heading into contact, we weren't protecting the ball well and we didn't maintain possession for any length of time," LeClerc added. "Turnovers were costly, as they are in any position-based game, but we just couldn't hold on to the ball."

Army will look for its first win against Connecticut this Saturday, while Norwich prepares to host AIC.

In other NWRC news, Boston College beat UMass 22-5, Boston University defeated Rhode Island 39-12, and UConn topped Northeastern 45-7.
