Lindenwood Women Slam WIU

The Lindenwood Lions women’s rugby team was ready for a big showdown against conference #2 Western Illinois University at Hunter Stadium under the lights for a night match this past weekend. The Lindenwood Lions have been undefeated in conference play this season and undefeated at home and looked to continue both of those streaks this Fall. The Lions were sporting their pink colors tonight as they wanted to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The Lions started hot and kept the scoring onslaught on while keeping the WIU team on zero for the night. Sophomore Davon Thomas was lighting up the pitch as she dashed in for six scores in only one half of play. The forward pack was led by Senior Morgan Crowell as her deceptive step and straight on smash mouth running was leaving a trail of WIU players figuring out how to stop her.
The Lions ended up making several substitutions at the half with the score of 88-0 at half time and focused on some new players getting experience in the second half as the match was all locked up from that point on the girls still kept their focus and added on another 54 points before the whistle blew.

“We had one goal this week and that was to switch on as a team” added Coach Billy Nicholas. “We hit that goal during this match and our attack found a scary attacking rhythm during the match with our support lines, it was great to watch”. We were able to get our full roster for the night in and get all of the girls playing time which is important to me in the development of the players and the team. “The players really made a statement to the growth of women’s rugby here at Lindenwood and their hard work and dedication to constant improvement is where the credit is due. We will be back to the drawing board this week and move on to our next opponent who are coming off a pretty big win themselves so should be a great match up”.

Final Score: 142–0 to the Lindenwood Lions.

The Lions will face off in a home match on Saturday, October 18th at Hunter Stadium against Illinois State University who are coming off a 60-12 win against SIU.
