Roger Williams, Salve Regina Winning Again

Salve Regina and Roger Williams are still at the top of the Colonial Coast Men’s DII college conference after convincing victories this weekend.

Salve defeated previously-unbeaten Plymouth State 48-10.

“This was our biggest fight so far,” said Salve club president Alex DiMauro. “The first two games weren’t all that hard for us. This one was. Their defense was bunching in round the rucks, so we ran some wide crash balls and that opened things up for us.”

Plymouth won the ball off the initial kickoff and almost scored in the first couple of minutes. But Regina was able to hold them, and that minor scare woke them up a little.

“Once we got the ball we kept it,” said DiMauro.

Freshman Joe Guff had a strong game for Salve Regina - he plays both hooker and flanker.

“What pleased me was that six or seven different guys scored tries,” said Salve Head Coach Sean Cassedy. “The tempo and the enthusiasm of these guys is really aggressive.”

Salve will face Roger Williams next week in a battle of undefeated teams. Roger Williams defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology 58-0.

“It’s been a good season for us so far,” said Roger Williams Head Coach Chris Palombo. “But we can do a lot better. We can be a lot cleaner in out offensive execution. Our defensive alignment is good, but we could get support closer to the breakdown and we could run better running lines. We know the games will become more challenging.”

Prop John Rice, No. 8 Luke Bradley, and flyhalf Charlie Stanley have played well for RWC. Stanley’s goalkicking has been a big part of their success.

“It seems every year we play Salve Regina, and whoever wins gets to the high levels of the playoffs,” said Palombo.

Added DiMauro: “We do look at the scores, we do pay attention, but at the same time we go out every game the same way. We can’t take any team lightly. Still Roger Williams is our biggest rivalry, and our biggest weekend.”
