Notre Dame, York Win Key Games in MARC

(Some standings details have been corrected in this updated story.)

Notre Dame College has all but clinched 1st in the MARC Men’s DII College conference after edging IUP 22-19 Saturday.

That put the Falcons at 5-0 with one game to play, and, coincidentally, that is against the one team that can catch them, Rowan.

Notre Dame were in its toughest battle of the season and, said Head Coach Brian McCue, didn’t play their best game.

“But we brought home a good away with,” he added.

No. 8 Tom Walsh led from the front for Notre Dame and scored a try, while flanker Everett Smith and center Zach Forro were outstanding in defense, and kept in check IUPs talented outside backs.

IUP drops to 4-2, but has still secured a MARC playoff spot. Rowan, idle this weekend, (corrected copy follows) lost to Notre Dame earlier and so IUP gold onto 2nd in the league, while Rowan takes 3rd.

With …?

Probably York College. The big game in MARC’s Tier II was this weekend between unbeaten York and unbeaten East Stroudsburg. The game went down to the wire, with York winning 25-24. ESU can still take 1st, however, if they win this coming Saturday against 2-3 Lehigh, and York loses against 1-4 Bloomsburg. It's tough for ESU, which likely missed out on a playoff spot by a single point.

MARC is divided into a Tier I and Tier II, with Tier II getting only one team into the semis, but that team being the #2 seed.

So the playoff scenario is likely going to be:
Notre Dame v IUP and York v Rowan.
