Fall DI Playoff Falls Flat

USA Rugby's attempt to incorporate fall men's DI college rugby into the spring playoffs has failed to take hold, at least this year.

With the ACRC Bowl Series getting interest from 18 teams, the USA Rugby plan to have a fall playoff that would place two teams in the spring DIAA final four just hasn't materialized. USA Rugby had hoped that at least four conferences, headed up by the Mid-American Conference, would send teams to a fall championship, but, ultimately, those teams opted for the Bowl Series

According to USA Rugby Collegiate Director Rich Cortez, the door remains open for the Bowl Series to be part of a national championship pathway next year. Going forward for 2014-2015, as many as 11 conferences could be involved in the DIAA playoffs, with space open for between one and five at-large bids.

DIAA Conferences that already have a champion are:
ECRC (AIC)
Keystone (West Virginia)
Ivy League (Dartmouth)
MAC (Bowling Green)
SCRC (South Carolina)
SWC (North Texas)

Of these, Dartmouth is in the Varsity Cup and could likely conclude that the VC plus the CRC 7s will be enough rugby in the spring. AIC is expected to take 7s very seriously in the spring, but might double-up. In those cases, other teams, such as Cornell or BC, might step forward.

Still to conclude (or event begin) are:
NCRC
SIRC
Heart of America
Pac West
Gold Coast
