GRR: USA Men 7s
The USA men’s 7s team dropped out of the Top 8 in the SVNS standings and so instead of playing in the final tournament to win, they will be playing at the kid’s table to see if they can come back to the series in 2024-25.
It was pool play of huge surprises in the Singapore 7s, at least where the USA was concerned.
The high-flying women's team, which had an eye on getting to the #3 seed, were edged late by South Africa, and beaten fairly comprehensively by Japan. They followed that up with a loss to France (more likely than losses to the other two) and 0-3 in Pool Play.
The USA men's 7s team's up-and-down season is now at a crucial point.
The Eagles get set to play in Singapore with a place in Madrid's eight-team final playoff on the line.
Stay in the Top Eight and you're guaranteed to be back for the 2024-25 season and you're in with a shot to win the championship.
(It's basically a playoff.)
The SVNS series can seem awfully unfair at times.
Appropriately enough USA captain Kevon Williams celebrated his 50th tournament by being the first to touch the ball and by scoring two tries as the USA men’s 7s team opened their LA 7s account with a 31-12 defeat of Samoa.
