GRR: Scholz Award
The USA Men's 7s team Head Coach Mike Friday has picked 16 players to travel for the USA Men’s Sevens National Team’s first international competition of 2021.
Rudy Scholz had such an impact on the game that his name adorns the award for the top men's college player in the US.
A graduate of Santa Clara University, where he played rugby, Scholz was a decorate veteran of World War I, and then returned to Belgium and France as part pf the USA Olympic rugby team in 1920 and 1924.
Saint Mary's prop Payton Telea Ilalio has received his 2019-2020 Scholz Award trophy.
Telea Ilalio was named the Rugby Sorensen Award Winner as the top men's college player in the country. He would normally have received his trophy at the annual awards dinner in Seattle, Wash. But with the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, the dinner was canceled.
