In a dramatic game in the Ivy League, Yale came back to beat Cornell Saturday in Ithaca, while Dartmouth had to work for a win and Brown won big.
In the opening two minutes of the game, Yale hooker Bryan Herbert was red-carded. That call put Cornell on the front foot and in the first quarter of the game they ran in three converted tries to lead 19-0.
It’s a soft opening for the new Harvard University rugby field, but it’s an opening.
Harvard’s Men’s, Women’s, and Business School teams will now play on Robert Mignone Field, so-named because Mignone was a major donor for the project. The field is located near the Harvard football stadium, and is an impressive facility, with bleacher seats and a press box.
James Madison University took care of business in the DIAA Round of 16 Saturday, beating Harvard 49-16 to move on to the quarterfinal/semifinal weekend at Bowling Green next week.
Harvard will join the DIAA Round of 16 after the Crimson won two games in an Ivy League play-in this past weekend.
Harvard defeated Princeton 25-21 on Saturday and then held off Cornell 21-14 on Sunday to win the tournament (the Ivy League champion, Dartmouth, does not play in the DIAA playoffs, so the next four teams compete to find the seed to nationals).
Harvard hosts the Crimson 7s this weekend in a warmup to the Varsity Rugby Conference 7s series which starts in a little ore than a week.
Harvard ran out two sides at the Frostbite 7s March 5, and won with their A side.
