CLEMSON, SC – The Cal Golden Bears dotted down 11 tries and held Clemson scoreless until the 80th minute to defeat the Tigers 71-5 Saturday on National Athletic Village Field in the quarterfinals of the Varsity Cup.
The Bears will host a semifinal Saturday, April 22, at 1 pm PT on Witter Rugby Field against Penn State, which defeated Army, 47-34, in University Park, Pa.
The Varsity Cup enters its quarterfinals and things get a little tougher for those who pulled out victories last week.
Here's a rundown of the Varsity Cup 1st round.
The Varsity Cup's 1st Round kicks off this weekend and in recent years we've seen a few surprises in this round.
While most would think that Cal and Central Washington are heavily favored to make the final (both teams get a bye this weekend), that doesn't mean all of the other games are foregone conclusions.
Here's what we think (Goff Rugby Report rankings in parentheses):
Life University has improved to 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference with a very convincing 81-12 victory over Clemson.
The Running Eagles got off to a quick start with tries from Harley Davidson, Zander van Schalkwyk, and freshman Ryan Rees. Clemson got a try back, but a quick-tap from emerging talent Harley Wheeler and then another try from van Schalkwyk made it 29-5 at halftime.
