GRR: Arkansas State
Life University defeated Arkansas State 32-15 in the annual Curt Huckaby Cup match played between the two teams.
The game is played in honor of ASU rugby program founder and first head coach, Curt Huckaby (see details here).
Life University travels to Arkansas State this weekend to play an exciting matchup between two very strong teams, but this game is more than just a game.
Sure, Life is ranked #4 and Arkansas State #5 by Goff Rugby Report, and sure a big win by one of these teams might have us taking #1, but this game is more about the relationship between the programs.
Arkansas State laid down something of a market this past Saturday, putting a pretty solid Davenport University to the sword 53-0.
It was the first game of the New Year for both teams, and a game that showed observers that the Red Wolves may be among one of the strongest college rugby teams this year.
In a matchup that two years ago would have been an exciting Mid-South Conference opener, Davenport will take on Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark.
For a final test for the fall, Arkansas State’s 45-7 victory has to be considered an A, as the Red Wolves defeated longtime rival Davenport.
ASU has been working in a group of new players, but also a new coach in the shape of former ASU All American Shaun Potgieter.
“I am growing into the job,” Potgieter told Goff Rugby Report. “And the guys are learning every day.”
