The USA Women's 7s team is set to face off in the final event of the Women's World Rugby Sevens Series, and there are changes afoot.

Lilly Durbin, who is still only 17 (and thus presumably needed a waiver) will suit up for the Eagles as they try to get the ship going in the right direction after a rough season that included two coaching changes, at least one come-to-Jesus meeting, and some seriously disappointing results.

Durbin was a standout for Fallbrook HS as a freshman and also for the Southern California girls select side. Of course, you first really heard about her here on Goff Rugby Report.

(See video interview below, and if you don't see it, refresh the page)

The speedy and elusive back is, so Coach Richie Walker hopes, there to put an attacking spark in a team that sorely needs it. She joins Richelle Stephens, another Fallbrook alum, on the squad (see our feature on Stephens here)

Another change in the lineup is Kathryn Johnson (we used to call her Katie Johnson - same person, just older), who left the USA program when Julie McCoy took over as coach and returned when Walker replaced McCoy. The rangy, aggressive back/forward brings a snarkiness the Eagles need, too.

The Eagles are two points behind Russia for 6th in the World Series. But that is basically irrelevant at the moment. It's clear they won't crack any higher than that, so the plan is more to start playing like an Olympic medal contender, which is something fans haven't seen in a while. They have some good opportunities, starting with Game 1, against England. To be a serious Olympic team, they have to hang with the English, at the very least.

That game kicks off May 28 at 5:44am ET. Then there's Spain, a team the USA has struggled to be despite having better athletes, and more powerful players. Somehow they tend to make silly errors that the Spanish punish. That game kicks off 8:50am ET. Then there's Kenya, a team they are heavily favored to beat. 11:34am ET.

But really it's about Day Two, as well, and playing consistently well for all of the games.

The games are live on The Rugby Channel.
