Wild Finish Highlights NCRC Saturday

Western Washington moved to 2-0 with a 38-5 defeat of Eastern Washington in Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference action.

WWU plays Gonzaga on Sunday on their two-game trip to the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. This was a tough opener for the Vikings, in cold, windy conditions. But WWU did well to score four tries and take the victory. Oregon notched their first win, 22-5 over Western Oregon.

But the wildest game in the conference was between Boise State and Washington State. Boise State led 31-17 with about 13 minutes to go, but WSU would not back down and ran in two tries, including the second with about two minutes to go, to tie the game 31-31.

Boise State had one more chance, and marched down the field with some good, hard running and well-times offloads. But just short of the tryline the Broncos knocked the ball on, and that ended the game.

"Ten of of our starting 15 played their first NCRC league match," said Boise State Coach Genetti. "And although we felt we could have done some things different to come out on the winning end, we were proud of our guys efforts in their first match of the spring and have a lot of positives to take forward."

Scoring for Boise State were Killian Farrell, Paul Grimsted, Zack Stolz, Jake Roometua, and Devin Guy, with Eric Fallon kicking three conversions.

Washington State got tries from Adam Pacheco and Drake Sanders, and two from Neal Tilbury, while Sean Powell added four conversions and a penalty goal.

WSU is now 2-0-1 and 2nd behind 4-0 Washington (who lost in a non-conference game to Central Washington). WWU is 2-0 with a game to go on Sunday. Boise State is now 0-0-1.
