West Point Camp to Teach Rugby, Leadership

West Point will be hosting a rugby camp in July, led by Army Head Coach and former USA World Cup veteran as a flyhalf and as a coach, Matt Sherman, and providing a unique rugby and leadership experience for boys who want to develop their skills.

"We believe if done right we can offer both a fun and enjoyable camp, but one that also challenges our players and is a rewarding experience where they improve and grow," said Sherman. "They are going to be coaches by current and former USA Eagles and USA Eagle coaches, such as current Eagle forwards coach Marty Veale and others, and as such be exposed to the most up to date best practice high performance  approaches.

"Overall, we want all of our campers to have a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience," Sherman added. "Our primary focus is on skill development, but we also give the boys ample opportunities to compete and play, while working on technical understanding of the game. Another element of our camp that we’re thrilled to be offering is exposure  to some of the world’s best leadership development resources that West Point is famous for."

The US Military Academy was founded in 1802 and has been producing US Army officers ever since. The men's and women's rugby team are now varsity at West Point. But it's not just about recruitment at this camp - Sherman said what he wants to do is use what West Point has to offer to reach kids.

"As a new varsity (Corps Squad) program at West Point, with recruiting capabilities, we will also be using our camp to evaluate potential recruits. All aspiring high school players interested in coming to West Point should come to camp to both showcase their talent on the field, and to experience life at West Point," said Sherman. But, regardless of where they go to college, campers will get the amazing opportunity to work with the Center for Enhanced Performance to develop their mental skills that will allow them to fully develop their potential in rugby and across other disciplines,"

The camp itself will break out into smaller groups based on age and ability. For the older high schoolers, the standard is expected to be very high.

We have a large camp, and we break our campers down into grouping based on age, ability and experience.  We adjust our curriculum to meet the levels of those groups.  For our oldest high schoolers the standard is very high.

"We will put a player in the right level group and coach to their level," said Sherman. "This we believe is a combination of both heightening their current abilities and introducing new ideas. We believe if done right we can offer both a fun and enjoyable camp, but one that also challenges our players and is a rewarding experience where they improve and grow.  They are going to be coaches by current and former USA Eagles and USA Eagle coaches and as such be exposed to the most up to date best practice high performance  approaches."
