Week 2 Wraps in MARC

The Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference (MARC) entered week two of league play and saw 12 of 14 teams in action. Last year's leaders, Kutztown and Bloomsburg, put up big numbers, defeating their respective opponents by a combined 157-5. (See full standings here)

The talk of the Pennsylvania Division had been Scranton, which defeated traditional powerhouse Shippensburg 26-10 during week one. But East Stroudsburg shifted the spotlight when it delivered Scranton a 17-10 defeat on Saturday. York bounced back from its 34-5 loss to Millersville, defeating Lock Haven 14-5 over the weekend. But like Scranton, Millersville couldn't repeat its success against division favorite Bloomsburg, which reigned 72-5 on Saturday.

There was little drama in the Tri-State Division, as Rowan forfeited to Delaware, St. Joe's improved to 2-0 with a 34-5 win over The College of New Jersey, and Kutztown opened with an 86-0 shutout over La Salle.

Despite the big numbers, Kutztown coach Sean Cobb insinuated that the team has some work to do before returning to post-season shape. The squad lost 15 players from last year's 15s team, including All Americans Faith Hughes and Sharyn Beodecker, and that deficit showed itself during an 11-try pre-season loss to women's club Brandywine.

"We have basically spent the first month of practices working on our defense, making sure that we are well organized and structured," Cobb explained. "We are also working hard to teach all of the new players the basic skills necessary to play rugby. The process is slow but it is coming along."

Aside from experience, Cobb soon realized he had a different team on his hands.

"This version of Kutztown is much different than the teams that made the [fall] Final Four the last two years," Cobb said. "Those teams were forward dominated. They would simply run the ball right at you and force you into a tackle contest. This year's team is smaller, and the attack will be set up to stretch defenses and open up play."

Of the 14 tries scored against La Salle, 11 came from the backs: fullback Natalie Flaim (5), flyhalf Mary Cate Matta (3 tries, 8 conversions), inside center Taylor Sandin (2), outside center Danielle Ashway. Hooker Paige Trock (2) and No. 8 Amber DeFabio also scored.

"Our forwards worked the inside of the pitch and opened up space for our backs," Cobb summarized. "Once the ball was wide, players committed their opposite numbers and put teammates into space. We are a young team, so there were a lot of errors, but overall I am happy with our performance."
