USA 7s Team Named for Wellington, Sydney

A healthy Carlin Isles returns.

USA Men's 7s Head Coach Mike Friday has picked his squad to play in the Wellington 7s Jan 27-28 and the Sydney 7s a week later.

Friday has made a few changes, bringing in former New Mexico Highlands star Kevon Williams. Williams led NMHU to a small college 7s championship and provides an influx of speed to what turns out to be a very quick lineup. Also on the roster is Carlin Isles, who has recovered from injury and joins his wing-mate, Perry Baker, as possibly the quickest one-two duo in the game. Also selected is Brett Thompson, the former University of Arizona football and rugby star who is a wing for the USA 15s team and a try-scoring machine in 7s when healthy. But the big, powerful Thompson has struggled with injuries; healthy, he's a handful.

With the selections of Thompson, Williams, and the retention of Matai Leuta, Friday has returned to the profile of a team that is tall, long-striding, and strong enough to play a physical game and quick enough to play out wide.

The squad includes former college stars Danny Barrett (Cal), Thompson (Arizona), Don Pati (Utah), Williams (NMHU), Stephen Tomasin (San Diego State, Madison Hughes (Dartmouth), and Martin Iosefo (Montana). In addition, Barrett (SFGG), Thompson (Tempe), Pati (Highland), Fulau Niua (East Palo Alto), Hughes (HS All Americans), and Iosefo (Hawaii) all played high school rugby.
