UMW Wins - Chesapeake Games Close

Fans await a UMW restart.

The University of Mary Washington defeated Salisbury University in Fredericksburg, Va. Saturday in the 2nd Chesapeake Rugby Conference game for both teams.

UMW got out to a fast start with a try from flyhalf Terence McPhillips in the first few minutes. This began up a flurry of scoring from UMW as they posted 17 points in the first 15 minutes.

Salisbury showed why they have made multiple national DII championships in the last fives years, and buckled down to slow the onslaught and keept it was 17-0. The second half opened with a strong showing from UMW and they ran out to a 34-0 lead with the forwards rucking and driving at every opportunity.  No. 8 Andrew Lamarca scored a nice try off a driving maul and fullback George Northwood ran in a 60-meter try to put the game out of reach.

True to form Salisbury continued to play committed rugby and scored an excellent, converted try in the last few minutes.

Also in the Chesapeake, Georgetown edged Virginia 23-19. Julian Graham and James Kraunelis scored tries for Georgetown and Charlie Sullivan added two conversions and two penalty goals as Georgetown came back from a 19-10 halftime deficit.

Close games continue to be the story of the Chesapeake, despite UMW's big win. Towson recorded their first victory of the conference with a 13-12 nailbiter, and Virginia Tech recorded a big result over Mount Saint Mary's 22-20 in dramatic fashion.

MSM remains in 1st place due to the close loss and having played three games, but UMW and Va Tech are now at 2-0.

"It was all about ball retention," said MSM Coach Jay Myles. "We had many ball-handling errors, and they capitalized. Virginia Tech is a fantastic team and will make you pay. It was a back-and-forth match, which truly is a staple of this conference. Every weekend is a battle and each team in this conference deserves to be here."
